Drive to
Mt.
Shasta (Friday,
June 28, 2003)
Shauney,
Lauren, her friend Amy Miller, Shauney’s mom Joan, Bob Lowell and I left
Novato about
noon in our RV with van in tow. By
6pm we were set up at the KOA in
Mt.
Shasta city. This would be the girls’
home for the next two days while Bob and I were on the mountain.
Hooking up.
In preparation for an early morning departure on Saturday,
we checked our gear and repacked our backpacks. We loaded Bob’s new GPS with
Mt.
Shasta topo information and got out
the clothing we would need for the morning’s climb.
“Hmmm, whatta ya think Bob, do we need this?”
The weather was clear, calm, and unusually warm, reaching
about 90 degrees during the day and 40s at night in
Mt.
Shasta city. I had purchased
additional fleece clothing after freezing my butt off at
Round
Top
Lake (a practice climb we took near
Kirkwood in May), but opted to leave it behind
expecting comfortable temperatures on the mountain. I would pay for this
decision later when the nighttime temperature plunged to well below freezing. |
